Basking in the glory of our World Cup victory, the South Africa’s sports tourism industry has never looked brighter. The country’s passion for sport is the driving force behind the growing success of the sports tourism industry.
With the 2010 Soccer World Cup a few years away the tourism industry is gearing up for huge growth.
According to the 2005 Annual Tourism Report by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) more than 10% of foreign tourists come to South Africa to watch or participate in sport events. South African.info reports spectators account for 60% to 80% of these arrivals.
Future sports events will only increase sport tourism numbers and therefore increase the need for accommodation.
Commercial property is certainly an industry that is both directly and indirectly affected by the growing tourism sector. As Berry Everitt, managing director of the Chas Everitt International property group, said in a recent Property24 report: “This growth is good news for the local property market.”
Everitt also notes that both the residential and commercial property markets are affected by the growth of the tourism industry. The direct impact on the property industry in terms of sports tourism will be the increased need for guest accommodation at all levels of the market from guest houses to new hotels. According to the annual tourism report most of the tourism investment opportunities fall under commercial property development.
Ahead of 2010 there is a great deal of this development taking place with the recent announcement by Jomo Sono Holdings to build a R600m hotel chain to coincide with the World Cup. Property24 reported that the un-built hotel already has reservations made by World Cup spectators for 2010. This shows the enormous property investment opportunity sports tourism brings to the South Africa market.
Everitt says sports tourism also affects the residential property market and adds “that tourism showcases the country’s many attractions, leading to visitors buying local property such as holiday homes”. – Bavani Naidoo Property24.com
