No More Chacma Baboon Panics. Feb 2015.

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

[date: Feb 2015] I live in this wonderful community with a few thousand people in the far south. In my community some of us tolerate the Chacma Baboons and are not poisoning them. Others continue to monitor the flourishing relationship between the so called superior race and these large human like mammals.

Today tourists flock to our village and contribute many hundreds of thousands of dollars to witness the harmony between Chacma Baboons and local residents. Politicians claim victory to the ending of the conflict that started in 1683. CNN and National Geographic visit the area regularly to shoot documentaries. We have all become famous. Even the hardened Chacma baboon haters will take you on a walk with the baboons.

The question remains to the real cause for the quantum leap (read human and baboon love affair), way back in 2007, when the new reality became the conscious norm. Today we can only speculate on the about turn. But I believe it can be based on the big bang theory. Let me try and explain:

During the later part of 2007 the Parks Board decided to implement some of the proposals made by concerned groups. They also decided to ban the attitude that can be described by the term, “what a pity”. The focused on building relationships with the community and a healthy dialogue followed. And on top of it all they decided to scrap the idea to create a park that resembles the pre-colonial times.

For some or other reason the anti Chacma baboon group decided that the baboons are not the problem. The problem is the system. And they worked with the baboon lobby and focused all their energy on how to manage and implement a working system.

One of the issues that we could not resolve was the baboon watch.

The baboons came down to town and although many people could see them they could not inform us all effectively and cheaply. Although people were walking on the moon we were technophobes. We could not track or alert our fellow neighbourhood of the planned baboon attack. Let alone communicate as a group.

But eventually we got a techno solution.

We decided to use a system developed for neighbourhood watch - employing cell phones and the internet (email).

This is how we used the system during the previous baboon visit:

At 09h17 Jack, who lives on the southern edge of the village (Rocklands Estate) saw the first baboons approaching. He went onto the internet and logged on to the crime incident website that he’s a member of. He reported the sighting time and whereabouts of the approaching baboons. He also electronically pin-pointed the sighting on the village map for all to see.

As soon as he submitted the incident the neighbourhood received the first SMS warning them of the baboon army approaching Rocklands. They closed their windows, removed all food, tied the bins down and locked the dogs in.

The Rocklands neighbourhood watch and other concerned parties who also received the SMS were put on standby.

At the same time as the SMS an email was sent to the village members. The email gave them an address on the website where they could watch and discuss the approaching baboons.

At 09h00 Clinton, a kilometre north of Rocklands, saw the Baboons on their way to Froggy Farm. Again he recorded the incident on the site. Another SMS and email was sent to all. This time around the Froggy Farm neighbourhood watch prepared and mobilised the community.

I think you get the idea.

Today we have 100’s of historical sightings on the village map and Baboon Matters use these to predict where the Baboons are most likely to enter the village. They now have early warning monitors at these points. They use the same system to alert the village.

I did not tell you about the old lady that was trapped by the Chacma baboons.

A few months ago an old lady did not notice the baboon alert on her cell phone. When see opened her kitchen door the baboon party was in full progress and they trapped her there.

She may have been surprised by the baboons but she was prepared. Because she was a member of the incident report network she pressed a speed dial on her cell phone. Within seconds four of her able friends received the SMS came to her assistance……….. immediately.

The system I am sharing with you is the eBlockWatch system. Villagers, neighbourhood watches, civic organisations and churches are welcome to contact me to de-power the minorities who are more than a nuisance.

Wishing you a connected neighbourhood day. SMS the word simon to this number 33930 and become part of the Simon’s Town neighbourhood who will depower any minority who is a nuisance. Watch this video on the de-powering of the unlwaful minority
