Allyson Vine from Welcome Glen wrote and took the photos:
This fire is too terrible.
It’s on Red Hill on the road to the dams.
It’s over the mountain in Scarborough… the road is closed where it jumped the road.
As we went over Red Hill past the squatter camp the fire is to the left , Cape Point direction & the right & straight ahead.
It’s just terrible!
With what must surely be a gale force wind blowing, I tried to steady my hands on the door of the car each time, but half the pictures were blurred.
I could see & feel the wind shaking the camera.
I was so pleased to see it isn’t near the squatter camp.

As soon as we see a fire we think, “How can we help?” And many times we are just standing by as onlookers. I don’t think it’s because we don’t want to help but rather; we don’t know how to help. This article may make it easier for us all to find a way to help fighting and limiting the impact of fires in and around Simon’s Town.
74 VWS members were deployed over a number of days to assist battling two raging fires in the South Peninsula in driving winds, accumulating over 1000 man hours on the fire line. A total of 2 175 ha of veld was burned (4 350 rugby fields) before the fire was finally extinguished.
How can you make a difference?
- Keep these numbers in a safe place:
- VWS Information Hotline: 084 700 5402
- Report Mountain Fires: 021 957 4700
- You can get involved with Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) by actively fighting the fires or providing logistical support, admin and planning.
- You can also help by giving donations (from as little as R25) or applicable tools.
- For all the details go to the VWS website.
What functions are provided by the VWS?
- They assist landowners with wildfire suppression.
- They provide education and awareness programmes, and
- They provide training for private landowners in wildfire prevention and management techniques.
This just gave me another idea to get more money to the VWS. Why not get your book club, your golf club, your historical association or civic group and invite VWS for a talk with the intention of collecting money for the VWS and educating us all.
Thank you Allyson for sharing your story and photos with us.
