Updates 14 March: Get the programme here and more Simon’s Town navy Festival news and future events here.
As you may know the Navy Festival will take place from 14 till 16 March 2008. And will be an action pack three days of Navy activities. This is a great opportunity to come and watch and enjoy this festival.

Arne Soderlund gave us a rundown of the festival and what you can expect during the three days. You can listen to what Arne had to say during the Simon’s Town Civic Association meeting here: Simon’s Town Navy Festival: Arne Soderlund [download]

A summary:

On 14 March
Navy Festival opens at 10:00 till 18:00.

The Dock Concert will be at 20:00 but the gates will open at 18:00.

The Navy plans to broadcast the concert and provide daily commentary on an FM channel and the frequency will be advised in due course. Reception will be limited to Simon’s Town and Glencairn (line of sight)

On 15 March
The Navy will exercise its Right of Entry Parade which will commence at 10:00 and the Main road will be closed between Cole Point Gate and West Yard Gate from about 0940 to 1100. Traffic will be diverted around Runciman Drive

After the parade, a march past by all units as well as specialist vehicles will take place. The route will be from the East Yard to the West Yard.
The East Yard and ships will again be open to the public from 10:00 until 18:00.
At 20:00 there will be a night shoot from Lower North Battery.

On 16 March
The East Yard and ships will again be open to the public from 10:00 until 18:00. A retreat parade will take place at the East Yard arena at 17:00

It should be noted that some of the visiting German Navy ships will also be open to visitors – a unique opportunity to visit these modern vessels. There will be a variety of arena events and the younger generation will also be able to ride in a tug.

Other issues:

The roads will be congested and the Navy wants to promote travel by train and, weather permitting, there will be a ferry service from the West Yard. The Court Yard gates will be open to pedestrians. Taxi and train passengers can walk past the museum to board the ferry which will take them to the festival area.

Parking: In addition to normal parking, the Navy will open Its Cole Point parking area to the public as well as the Martello parking area and adjoining sports field.

Options to get to the Navy Festival

  • Get there by boat from the West Yard if coming from the north.
  • Enter at the Cole Point gate.
  • Enter through the old East Yard Gate and walk down the stairs.
  • Enter though the gate at the Martello Tower.

A map of the area and programme of events will be provided on entry and made available on this site as well.

Thank you Arne for making this information on the Simon’s Town Navy Festival available to us all.

See you at the Navy Festival.
