Thanks for visiting!

Monday was a beautiful day in Simon’s Town; the blue dam was a mirror, the temperature 24˚C with no wind. This was the ideal time for any Simon’s Town real estate agent to sell properties. But……….As you know the sellers are plenty and the buyers few. And the Horak’s took the day off!

Not only was the special day an excuse; on Sunday we were sitting at two different show houses. We have to thank the neighbours, for popping in, your friendly faces made the long lonely hours worthwhile.

Monday morning we were up early for a walk and coffee at Bertha’s. As usual the Simon’s Town boat man was also sitting there. David smiles all the time, but with this weather he was having real fun. He invited Elmarie and me to join him on one of his whale watching trips ;-)

At 14:30 we left, with lots of tourists, on David’s boat and headed for the Roman Rock Light house. Then followed an extended tour of  False Bay in search of whales.

Barely thirty minutes away we saw more than 600 common dolphins.

By The Way:

  • Why are they called common dolphins?
  • Would you like to be called a common human?

We spend 10 to 15 minutes with the not so common dolphins as they graciously  entertained us. I had a feeling that they were smiling at me. And for obvious reasons I did not share this insight with any on the boat. |I might just be called a romantic dreamer. Well! The privilege was special.

We left! Can you believe it! But there was more……

Within minutes of leaving the dolphins we came across a lone Bryde’s Whale. A brief appearance before it disappeared forever. At least that’s how it felt as we searched and searched. Eventually we left but will be back in search of a Bryde’s Whale another time.

Do you know why this whale is called the Bryde’s Whale? Read it all here.

Two very active whales:

As we approached Strandfontein we saw what we all hoped to see; two Southern Right whales ready and willing to entertain us. We were treated to tail waving, wing bashing, log rolling, and the painful nasal noise when they blow out air. Eventually they had enough of our attention and departed silently.

On the way back we saw five more Southern Right whales. They must have been friends as they cuddled next to each other in log formation, touching and rolling as they bathed in the sun.

If you consider the icy waters where the Southern Right whales come from then a fun sun day like Monday must be special for these whales.

And therefore we went out to tell you this story.

Have fun

Johan Horak

P.S. Thanks to David for taking such care when he shares the whaling experience.
