Is Simon’s Town the idea place to purchase a property? It believe it depends on you.

Lately I have spoken to many people who want to relocated; they either want to leave Gauteng and come to stay in Simon’s Town or they want to leave South Africa for Perth or the USA.

A few years ago a friend decided to go to Australia and he had to justify his decision. He was so emotional that he nearly convinced me I had to do the same. But looking back his justification was based on all the things wrong with South Africa and why we had to leave - positive about South Africa. Therefore our discussion did not make me feel good.

A few years later that same friend came back to SA and had to justify why he was back. This time he complained about the Aussies and their country and even used some positive points about South Africa to prove his point.

Another wealthy friend and his wife decided to start a new life in Australia because they wanted their one and only daughter to feel at home in Aussieland when she starts her university years. Well today, two years later they are all back and the daughter studies UCT – her choice.

I was listening to a friend’s relative who is very negative about South Africa and wanted to move to Perth. He did the whole exercise and decided that it’s not good enough. We then suggested the USA and he said, “There are too many natural disasters in the USA!”

Where do you want to stay?

The following story gave me the answer:

A wise man in an Indian Village was approached, for advice, by two separate men who wanted to relocate to his village:

The first one asked the wise man if this village was a peaceful village to bring up his kids.

The wise man asked him to tell more about his current village?

The man said that his current village was a bad place, with bad people and stealing, his kids were having a hard time and his wife hated the village.

The wise old man said, “This is also a bad village, the people steal here, children are having a bad time and your wife will hate it.”

The second man asked the same question and the wise man again asked him about his current village.

The man said that his current village was a great place, the people loving, his wife enjoyed it and the kids had a lot to do.

And the wise man said, “My village is a great place and your family will love my village”.

Moral of the story:

Simon’s Town is a great place if you are happy with what you have. You’ll be a happy person where ever you go. And I will be trying to follow you.

Have fun in Simon’s Town.

P.S. I wanted to write about VAT, Capital Gains Tax and other issues but it can be very boring. Here are a few tips on some of these issues:

  • Be aware when you buy any residential property when VAT is part of the deal
  • I know of very few practical reasons why you should ever purchase a residential home in a public company or close corporation
  • You should only consider buying your second home in a trust
  • Be careful when you sell your property to a business or a trust. Ensure that there is a clause included that ties the nominated person (who signs) to the sales contract in his/her personal capacity. This is critical when the signatory is for some or other reason not legally allowed to purchase the property.
