R100 000 Reward For Info on Fire

The fires are getting out of control. Every week new fires are threatening our peninsula. There are arsonists causing these fires. We cannot sit back and wait until the fire is at our doorstep. So we drive the roads up and down at any time of the day and night to see if there are fires as an early warning. Anybody can do this to help. In order to fend off arsonists I want to encourage everybody, also insurances to pledge money into a fund for rewards on information in getting arsonists into the hot seat at court and into prison.

Firefighters have worked through the night, battling fires in the Cape Peninsula.

In the past 24 hours, about 390 emergency services staff have battled some 18 reported fires.

Residents evacuated from an informal settlement close to Simons Town say they feared for their lives, as they watched a massive fire race towards their homes last night.

The residents, mostly women and children, were evacuated from their homes and sent to a nearby community centre. Some residents say the flames were just metres from their homes.
