A Wednesday In Simon’s Town Discussing Logos for the Civic Association

During the last few days I was involved in a volley of email exchanges on the new Simon’s Town Civic Association logo.
Reading these emails I understood why warring family-clans opted for a hodgepodge of crowing birds, braying donkeys, roaring lions, beer mugs and other paraphernalia; calling it a coat of arms to stifle the tempers.
So here is my “tung in cheek” opinion record of the logo creation process.

I believe a coat of arms is a compromise and it stifles creativity and a focus on the future. This is not entirely true. Many new abstract concepts also include various concepts and believes. (On the right is the original Simon’s Town Coat of Arms. read more here.
What are the alternatives?
Will it be the African Penguin?
No. Penguins are noisy, dirty and stinking birds. Therefore they are controversial and will not be supported by the Boulders community who live next to these braying birds.
Will it be Just Nuisance the Famous Navy Dog?
That dog? No. Simon’s Town is not all about the dog. Ok.
Let’s think about it.
Simon’s Town is not only about Just Nuisance, it’s not just about penguins, it’s not just about the history or the navy or the sea or the whales or the mountain.
Well, if it’s not just ONE of them then why don’t we include them all? Can you see where this is going? It’s going for the compromise Coat Of Arms.
Wait. Wait! The mountain from Red Hill is an icon. Many thousands of people have painted and photographed it during the years gone past. Yes. Ok. Let’s have a look at a few:
Can we be adventurous and look at the future? What about this coat of arms?
Are you out of your mind? A funky logo for Simon’s Town! We are primarily a historical town? And it continues; we need to preserve our heritage.
What will the final decision be? A traditional or a abstract coat of arms or a historical view from Red Hill?
Time will tell.
