Baboons, Structural Engineers, Building Inspectors and Other Problems

Some want to shoot them. Some want to poison them. Some wish P.W. Botha could relocate them. Simon’s Towners have mixed feelings about baboons, engineers and building inspectors. But what about the Parks Board?
The largest mammal in our local park is the Chacma Baboon. To some they are a nuisance and are being killed. My opinion is that they are being killed by people like you and me, because we, humans, think we are superior. And we tend to focus on the culprit rather than the system.
The Chacma Baboons invade our homes, steal our food and they threaten us with their presence. But when we share this tragedy with our Parks Board their response is “what a pity!”Did you know
1) To keep your dog indoors when baboons come to visit?
2) Baboons tend not to react when YOU stay calm?
3) Baboons can open VW Golf doors?
4) A dustbin lit tied down with wire will keep them away?
and before you get all clever there in front of your TV call me and I’ll show you.
The baboon-human issues will remain as long as the Parks Board refuses to have a relationship with us, the Simon’s Town Public.
By the way:
I just heard a rumor that the Chacma Baboons will not be an issue in 2015
If you think Baboons and the Parks Board are the only headaches then you are not aware of another specie called the Structural Engineers of the City of Cape Town.
During our latest heavy rains a few homes were evacuated in Simon’s Town due to unsafe situations. Can it be true that the Structural Engineers allowed and/or ignored certain regulations that caused the collapse of certain structures?
In my street the supporting structure came crashing down on the road see images below. In Victory Way two houses were evacuated because a poorly designed structural wall that collapsed. In another case two structural incidents occurred at the Caltex garage.
Let me use the baboon nuisance to justify my point.
Can you compare the invasion of baboons to your neighbour who builds a home with an incompetent structural engineer?
Yes, I know you can!!
Because you like the status quo.
The older you get the more you prefer……. no change.
Listen! I am not including all of you….just some of you.
And you don’t care about the occasional death due to structural problems because it will not happen to you and your lovely wife.
A surprise is awaiting building inspectors.A strict protocol is planned for these public servants. When you hear what Nicki Holderness has to say you’ll be a happy Simon’s Towner. They plan to have the Fish Hoek Planning Office re-opened. A planner will be available once a week and all plans will be kept in Fish Hoek. You surely realise the importance of this accomplishment by our local councilor.
Some other issues that may interest you:
1) Long Beach is getting shorter.
2) The road between Muizenberg and Clovelly will be reconstructed.
3) The collapsing structure at Seaforth Beach will be repaired .
4) 3000 Baboon proof bins will be distribute to high incident areas.
Let’s stand together, together we have the ability to solve our nagging issues.
Wishing you a lovely day.
