Is our local artist Paul a trouble maker?

Thanks for visiting!

Saturday morning my wife went into a few Simon’s Town shops and I was dragged along :-). I introduced myself to the friendly Di at Salt Water and we started talking. During the discussion Paul’s name was mentioned as a person who always tries to help. I then recalled a story told by Terry that the local artist, Paul, was personally going to “frog march” a vagrant out of town.

OK. I decided to go and meet Paul. As I prodded him he started telling me how he gets involved, how he tries to stop brawls between vagrants and between car attendants and vagrants. He makes sure that the police is notified of all insidents and he organised a security guard on bicycle to patrol the area. His only frustration is that he battles to get all the shop owners to pay their monthly contribution.
Paul has been called a trouble maker by some, I am not sure if that is a true reflection of him. All I know is that he’s trying to make a difference.

Paul’s story is applicable to many people in towns and cities in South Africa. We get ordinary law abiding citizens who become activist because they feel frustrated. And when they don’t get support things may get out of hand.

That’s the one issue. The other is that we are allowing the minority to de-power us and we wait till this minority become hardened criminals before we support the Paul Dixon’s of this world.
May we all become pay-it-forward-buddies in Simon’s Town and empower the majority of law-abiding people.
