My name is Jackie. I am the self appointed penguin spokes person. Today I’ll introduce the African Penguin to you.
Clever people call the African Penguin Spheniscus demersus. They are also known as the Black Footed Penguin. And before, they were called the Jackass Penguin; because African penguins make a sound like a donkey’s bray. But let’s be politically correct, they are no donkey. They are African Penguins.
The African Penguin family is spread across the south-western coast of Africa. Today they live in colonies on 24 islands between Namibia and Algoa Bay, close to Port Elizabeth, South Africa, with the largest colony on Dyer Island.
African Penguins did not like the African main land due to intruders, and other predators, predators who stole their eggs and who killed them.
But wait! in the 1980’s these proud birds returned to the African mainland, close to Cape Town, at Boulders Beach, Simon’s Town, and Stony Point in Betty’s Bay. Can you believe it, these penguins decided to return and humans had nothing to do with it.
Ok. I agree, that’s not entirely fair, I think it is because of good people like you that they were able to prosper again on the African main land. But it’s not all that easy.
Today you’ll find me at Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town. My African penguin colony is very popular with tourists. They take photos of my friends, they even swim with these African penguins because they allow tourists very close to them.
Get going, come and see me today
